Early Life and Education
Henri Charles Antoine Réber was born in Paris, France, on October 21, 1807. He displayed a remarkable talent for music from a young age, and he entered the prestigious Paris Conservatory in 1825 to study under famed cellist Louis Pierre Norblin.
Career as a Cellist and Conductor
After graduating from the Conservatory in 1830 as a cellist, Réber initially pursued a career as a performer. However, he quickly recognized his passion for conducting. In 1841, he became the conductor of the Lyon Opera Orchestra, a position he held for 22 years.
Leading Parisian Orchestras
In 1863, Réber was appointed as the principal conductor of the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, one of the most renowned orchestras in Paris. He simultaneously served as a conductor at the Paris Opera, where he was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to bring out the best in his musicians.
Friendship with Hector Berlioz
Henri Réber was a close friend and collaborator of Hector Berlioz, the revolutionary French composer. He was an ardent advocate of Berlioz's works and frequently conducted their first performances. Berlioz dedicated his "Symphonie Funèbre et Triomphale" to Réber.
Premieres and Recordings
In 1867, Réber conducted the highly anticipated premiere of Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Don Carlos" in Paris. His meticulous preparation and passionate interpretation earned him critical acclaim and solidified his reputation as one of the leading conductors of his time.
