Frank Coghlan Jr.: Early Life and Career
Frank Coghlan Jr. was born in New Haven, Connecticut, but moved to Hollywood with his family as an infant. His father hoped he would pursue medicine, but Frank began appearing in films and soon became a popular child actor.
Child Movie Star
Coghlan's first role was in the silent serial "Daredevil Jack" at the age of 7. His freckles, infectious smile, and natural charm caught the attention of filmmakers, and he quickly rose to stardom. By the mid-1920s, he had caught the attention of Cecil DeMille, who cast him in the role of a homeless urchin.
Transition to Young Adulthood
As Coghlan grew older, he began to seek more mature roles. He played a gangster's son in "The Public Enemy" and a wounded soldier in "Gone with the Wind." In 1941, he landed the iconic role of Billy Batson in the serial "Adventures of Captain Marvel."
Military Service
During World War II, Coghlan served as a naval aviator. He spent 23 years in the military, rising to the rank of lieutenant commander and serving as a technical advisor on various film productions.
Post-Military Career
After retiring from the military, Coghlan continued to act in television shows and films. He also became the Director of Planning and Development at the Los Angeles College of Optometry.
