In 1941, Herbert married Flora Parkinson, but they divorced in 1945. They had a daughter named Penny together. In 1946, he enrolled at the University of Washington, where he met Beverly Ann Stuart, the only other person in their class with published stories. They married in 1946 and had their first son in 1947, followed by a second son in 1951.

Herbert's first work of science fiction, the short story "Looking for Something?" was published in Startling Stories in 1952. Throughout the 1950s, he published several stories in various magazines and released the novel "The Dragon in the Sea" in 1955, also known as "Under Pressure". However, Herbert gained widespread recognition after the publication of his novel "Dune World" in 1963, the first part of the "Dune" series. The sequel, "The Prophet of Dune," was published in Analog magazine. In 1965, these two parts were combined into a single novel, which quickly became one of the most popular science fiction novels of the 20th century. It received prestigious awards such as the Nebula and Hugo Awards.

In the following years, Herbert continued the story of the desert planet with novels such as "Dune Messiah" (1969), "Children of Dune" (1976), "God Emperor of Dune" (1981), "Heretics of Dune" (1984), and "ChapterHouse Dune" (1985). His son, Brian Herbert, continued the series after Frank Herbert's death.

Apart from the Dune series, Frank Herbert wrote many other books, including "The Green Brain" (1966), "Destination: Void" (1966), "The Eyes of Heisenberg" (1966), "The Heaven Makers" (1968), "The Santaroga Barrier" (1968), the "Whipping Star" duology (1970), and "The Dosadi Experiment" (1977).
