William McKinley
Early Life and EducationWilliam McKinley was born in Hillsboro, Illinois. He graduated from high school in Decatur in 1896 and went on to teach in the village school in Ramsey.
Military Service and Political Beginnings
McKinley served as a private in the 4th Illinois Infantry Regiment during the Spanish-American War. After the war, he returned to teaching and was elected to the 59th United States Congress as a Republican, serving from 1905 to 1907. He unsuccessfully ran for reelection in 1906.
State Government and Later Career
McKinley held the position of Assistant Adjutant General of Illinois from 1908 to 1910, and Adjutant General of Illinois from 1910 to 1922. From 1922 to 1924, he served as Assistant Treasurer for the Emergency Fleet Corporation and the United States Shipping Board. He also worked as a secretary for Senator Medill McCormick and later for the Chicago branch of the National Association of Insurance Agents until his passing.
Legacy
William McKinley was buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois, but was later reinterred at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
