Early Life and Education

Jamie Patrick Shea was born on September 11, 1953, in London. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Modern History and French from the University of Sussex in 1977. In 1981, he received his Doctor of Philosophy (Modern History) from Lincoln College, Oxford University.

Career at NATO

Shea's career at NATO began in September 1982, when he worked as an Administrator in the Council Operations Section. From October 1980 to September 1982, he led Youth Programs.

Assistant to the Secretary-General (1988-1991)

From November 1988 to January 1991, Shea served as Assistant to the Secretary-General of NATO for special projects. He primarily focused on speechwriting, ghostwriting, press releases, book chapters, and official communiqués.

Senior Policy Advisor (1991-1993)

From January 1991 to July 1993, Shea held the position of Deputy Head and Senior Staff Member of the Policy Planning Unit. During this time, he was also NATO's chief speechwriter and drafted NATO communiqués at ministerial and policy planning levels.

NATO Spokesperson (1993-2000)

From July 1993 to September 2000, Shea became NATO's Spokesperson and Deputy Director of Information and Press.

Director of Information and Press (2000-2003)

From October 2000 to March 2003, Shea served as the Director of Information and Press.

Deputy Assistant Secretary-General (2003-2005)

Shea held the position of Deputy Assistant Secretary-General for External Relations within the Public Diplomacy Division from April 2003 to August 2005.

Director of Political Affairs (2005-Present)

Since 2005, Shea has been the Director of Political Affairs at the Office of the Secretary-General at NATO Headquarters in Brussels. In this role, he advises and assists the Secretary-General on strategic issues facing the Alliance.

Academic and Advisory Roles

In addition to his work at NATO, Shea is currently a Professor at the College of Europe in Bruges, a Lecturer at the Brussels School of International Studies, and an Associate Professor in International Relations at the American University in Washington DC. He is also an Adjunct Professor of International Relations at James Madison College, an External Advisor and Curriculum Developer at the University of Sussex, and a Senior Fellow of the Transatlantic Programme at Royal Holloway College, University of London.

Awards and Recognition

In 1999, Shea was named 'European Communicator of the Year' by PR Week magazine.

Personal Life

Shea is married with two children, Chiara and Alexander. He is fluent in French, German, Spanish, and Dutch, and has a working knowledge of Italian.
