Biography of Frank Wilczek
Frank Wilczek is an American physicist and Nobel laureate in physics. He was born in Mineola, New York, into a mixed Polish-Italian family. He completed his primary education in Queens and then attended Van Buren High School. In 1970, he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the University of Chicago. He went on to earn a Master's degree in 1972 and a Ph.D. in 1974 from Princeton University.
Currently, Wilczek is a physics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the Center for Theoretical Physics. He has also worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara. In 2002, he was awarded the Lorentz Medal for his contributions to theoretical physics.
In 1973, while working as a graduate student with David Gross at Princeton University, Wilczek made the discovery of asymptotic freedom. This theory states that as quarks get closer to each other, the strong interaction (or color exchange) between them becomes weaker. When quarks are extremely close together, the nuclear forces between them are so weak that they behave almost like free particles. This theory, independently discovered by David Politzer, was a significant step in the development of quantum chromodynamics.
Wilczek has made contributions to the detection and development of axions, anyons, asymptotic freedom, color superconductivity phases of quark matter, and other aspects of quantum field theory. He has worked on a wide range of topics, including condensed matter physics, astrophysics, and elementary particle physics. His current interests include pure particle physics, the connection between theoretical ideas and observable phenomena, the behavior of matter at extremely high temperatures, densities, and phase structures, the application of particle physics in cosmology, the application of field theory techniques in condensed matter physics, and quantum theory of black holes.
In early 2005, Wilczek appeared in an episode of the comedy show "Penn & Teller: Bullshit!" titled "Ghostbusters." He was brought in as an expert to debunk paranormal pseudoscience.
