André-Eugène Blondel: A Pioneer in Electrical Engineering and Photometry
Early Life and Education
André-Eugène Blondel was born on August 28, 1863, in Chaumont, France. He excelled in his studies and obtained admission to the prestigious École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, graduating in 1888.
Engineering Career
Blondel initially worked as an engineer for the Lighthouses and Beacons Service. He also collaborated with Marie Maxime Cornu at the École Polytechnique before becoming a professor of electrical engineering at École des Ponts et Chaussées and Mines ParisTech in 1893.
Scientific Discoveries
Oscillograph and Electrical Discharge InvestigationsDespite a physical disability that confined him to his room for 27 years, Blondel continued his scientific advancements. In 1893, he developed the bifilar and soft iron oscillographs, winning a Grand Prix at the St. Louis Exposition in 1904. These devices revolutionized the study of electrical phenomena.
Blondel also established the three types of electric arcs: the primary and secondary Duddell arcs and the continuous oscillatory discharge.
Photometric Units
In 1894, Blondel proposed the lumen and other photometric units, based on the meter and the Violle candle. These units became widely adopted in the field of photometry.
Synchronization and Alternator Theories
Blondel published groundbreaking works on connecting synchronous generators in alternating current networks (1892) and the empirical theories of synchronous alternators (1899). These theories provided a deeper understanding of the behavior of alternating currents.
Honors and Recognition

Later Life
In 1909, Blondel collaborated on the construction of the first long-distance AC transmission line, transmitting over 350 km of electricity from the Rhone hydroelectric plant to Paris. He continued to make significant contributions to electrical engineering until his passing.
