Biography of Frank William Taussig
Frank William Taussig was an American economist and professor, known as one of the creators of trade theory. He was born on December 28, 1859, in St. Louis, Missouri, to William and Adele Taussig. His parents encouraged his interest in music and literature, and he began playing the violin from an early age.

Taussig attended a public school in St. Louis and later enrolled at Smith Academy. He then transferred to Washington University in St. Louis, which had been founded shortly before his birth, but after a year, he transferred to Harvard, where he graduated in 1879. He spent a year traveling in Europe, studying economics at the University of Berlin.
Upon returning to Harvard, Taussig obtained degrees in economics and law. He also served as the secretary to Harvard President Charles William Eliot for several years. In 1886, he earned a law degree and remained as a professor at Harvard. In 1892, Taussig became a professor of economics and spent a significant part of his professional career at Harvard, with the exception of a few years when he served in the federal government.
From 1889 to 1890 and from 1896 to 1935, Taussig served as the editor of the 'Quarterly Journal of Economics.' In 1904 and 1905, he was the president of the American Economic Association, and from 1917 to 1919, he chaired the United States Tariff Commission. In March 1919, he was invited to Paris for consultations on commercial agreements, and in November, upon the invitation of President Woodrow Wilson, Taussig attended the Second Industrial Conference in Washington, aimed at establishing peace between labor and capital. He was also a strong supporter of the creation of the League of Nations.
Frank Taussig passed away on November 11, 1940, at the age of 80 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His successor at Harvard was Joseph Schumpeter. In 1988, Taussig married Edith Thomas Guild, and they had four daughters, including Helen Brooke Taussig, a renowned pediatrician and cardiologist. After the death of his first wife in 1910, he married Laura Fisher.
