President of the Seychelles
Early Life and EducationRené was born on November 16, 1935, in Mahé, Seychelles. He received his education in Switzerland and England.
Political Career
René became a member of the Seychelles Legislative Assembly in 1965. In 1965, he founded the Seychelles People's United Party, which he chaired until 1979. He served as Minister of Public Works and Land Development from 1975 to 1977.
Prime Ministership and Coup
On June 29, 1976, René became Prime Minister of the Seychelles. On June 5, 1977, he led a coup d'état, overthrowing President James Mancham.
Presidency
On June 26, 1979, René was elected President of the Seychelles. He held various cabinet positions concurrently, including Minister of Foreign Affairs and Finance (1977-1979), Minister of Finance and Industry (1981-1989), Minister of Planning and External Relations (1984-1989), Minister of Defense (1986-1993), and Minister of Industry (from 1998).
Party Leadership and Elections
René chaired the Seychelles People's Progressive Front from 1978 to 1984 and served as its General Secretary from June 1984. He was elected President in 1993, 1998, and 2001, receiving substantial majorities.
Retirement
On April 14, 2004, René retired as President, transferring power to Vice President James Michel. He remained the leader of the Seychelles People's Progressive Front.
