Early Life and Education
Franz Xaver Hacker was born on January 20, 1836, in the Nymphenburg district of Munich, Germany. His father, Andreas, was a schoolteacher, and his mother, Magdalena, was a homemaker. Franz Xaver attended elementary school and then went on to graduate with honors from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in 1855. He furthered his education by studying philosophy, theology, and law at institutions in Freising, Metten, and Munich.
Priesthood and Literary Beginnings
Ordained a priest in 1859, Franz Xaver entered the Capuchin monastery, where he took the name Wolfgang. He soon left the order, however, and became a parish priest. In 1865, he became gravely ill and was unable to perform religious duties for three years. His health improved after he was transferred to the parish of Kimsee.
While in Kimsee, Franz Xaver wrote his first novel, "Das Marienkind." Published under the pseudonym Franz von Seeburg, it appeared in a magazine in installments. Unable to finance the printing of the complete work, Franz Xaver was fortunate to meet Friedrich Pustet, a publisher, who visited him in Kimsee. Pustet's interest led to a close friendship and the publication of Franz Xaver's books through Pustet's publishing house.
Continued Ministry and Literary Career
Despite his literary pursuits, Franz Xaver continued his priestly duties. From Kimsee, he was transferred to a vicarage in Munich. He also taught and preached at the Wilhelmsgymnasium from 1877 to 1887. In 1886, he was appointed chaplain and honorary canon of the Church of St. Cajetan. The following year, he became inspector and director of the Royal Institute for the Blind in Munich. He was also inducted into the Council of Royal Clergy by Prince Regent Luitpold.
Franz Xaver von Seeburg died in Munich on January 28, 1894.
Literary OutputFranz Xaver von Seeburg's first novel, "Das Marienkind," was a success, with several editions published during his lifetime. Among his most notable historical and biographical works are:
"Licht im Dunkel" (1875), depicting life in Bavaria in the early 19th century
"Die Fugger und ihre Zeit" (1879), about the famous merchant family of Augsburg
