A Life of Darkness and Wit: Shirley Jackson
Early Life and EducationShirley Jackson was born in San Francisco in 1916. She earned her bachelor's degree from Syracuse University in 1940, where she met her future husband, Stanley Edgar Hyman. The couple settled in North Bennington in 1945.
Entertaining Tales and Family Life
Jackson became a beloved author of domestic humor with her two novels, "Life Among the Savages" (1953) and "Raising Demons" (1957). These works contrasted sharply with her darker stories, which explored the evil and darkness lurking beneath the surface of seemingly mundane lives.
Master of Gothic and Psychological Suspense
One of Jackson's most famous short stories, "The Lottery," was published in "The New Yorker" in 1948 and sparked a storm of controversy. Her six completed novels, including "The Haunting of Hill House" (1959) and "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" (1962), cemented her reputation as a master of gothic and psychological suspense.
Literary Legacy and Untimely End
Jackson died suddenly of heart failure in her sleep in 1965. Posthumously, her husband published "Come along with Me: Part of a Novel, Sixteen Stories, and Three Lectures," which included chapters from Jackson's unfinished novel, several stories, and speeches she delivered at her writing workshops.
