Her tally includes seven medals in relay events, making her the most decorated Olympic relay swimmer in history.
Van Almsick specialized in freestyle, particularly in distances ranging from 50 to 400 meters. She also competed in butterfly. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, she remained one of the world's top freestyle swimmers.
