Kylie Masse: Canadian Swimming Star
Early Life and CareerKylie Masse was born on January 18, 1996, in LaSalle, Ontario. She began swimming at a young age with the Windsor Essex Swim Team under the guidance of coach Andrei Semenov. She later went on to swim for the University of Toronto, where her performances earned her the honor of Swimmer of the Year for the 2015-16 season.
Olympic Success
Masse made her Olympic debut at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She was Canada's top swimmer in the 100-meter backstroke. Masse set and broke the national record in the 100m backstroke in both the preliminary heats and semifinals. In the final, she tied for the bronze medal with Fu Yuanhui, again setting a new national record (58.76).
World Record and World Championship Gold
At the 2017 Canadian Swimming Championships, Masse broke the American record in the 100m backstroke with a time of 58.21, which also stands as the fastest time ever recorded in a textile suit and the third-fastest time in history. At the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, she shattered an eight-year-old world record and claimed her first World Championship title, swimming the distance in 58.10 seconds. She became the first Canadian woman to ever become world champion and the first Canadian swimmer to win a world title since Brent Hayden (2007).
Mixed Results at the 2018 Commonwealth Games
Masse competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where she set two Commonwealth Games records en route to the final in the 100-meter backstroke. She again set a record in the final, edging out Emily Seebohm for the gold medal. Masse also won a gold medal in the 200m backstroke the following day, setting another Commonwealth Games record ahead of 17-year-old teammate Taylor Ruck. Masse also swam a Canadian record time in the 50m backstroke, finishing second, and claimed another silver medal in the 4x100m medley relay.
