Fred Eaglesmith is a Canadian singer and songwriter who primarily performs alternative country music. He grew up in a farming family in the agricultural region of Southern Ontario. As one of nine children, Fred escaped the rural idyll of Eldersma as a teenager by hitching a ride on a passing freight train. Even then, he had plans to make a living by performing his own songs.

Fred's childhood memories had a unique impact on his music. His songs often depict rural life, dogs, guns, alcohol, farming, and other country pastimes. He frequently writes songs about mechanical modes of transportation, with trains, cars, trucks, and tractors being constant themes in his work. Many of Fred's songs explore themes of decay, such as crumbling and nearly abandoned farms, and the struggles of small business owners. His relatable characters, often in desperate situations, fiercely fight for their fragile happiness. Fred's band has had two names: 'The Flying Squirrels' and 'The Flathead Noodlers,' which they change depending on the type of music they are playing. 'The Flathead Noodlers' specialize in bluegrass, while 'The Flying Squirrels' focus on folk and rock. At the beginning of his career, Fred's collective was known by a now almost forgotten third name, 'The Smokin' Losers.' During his performances, Fred's songs are often interspersed with comedic monologues delivered by the singer himself. He frequently talks about crossing the border between Canada and the United States and his friends from Native American reservations.
