Biography: Fred Fugen - The Skyscraper Base Jumper
Fred Fugen, a French extreme athlete and pioneer of modern skydiving, is a record holder who has achieved several breathtaking feats. Recently, Fred, along with his partner Vince Reffet, set a new world record by leaping from the highest skyscraper in the world, the 163-story "Burj Khalifa" in Dubai. Standing at a height of 828 meters, this iconic building had been the site of previous jumps, but only Fred and Vince managed to jump from its pinnacle.
Early Life and Passion for Skydiving
Frédéric 'Fred' Fugen was born in France and developed a passion for skydiving from an early age. Encouraged by his parents, who were avid skydivers themselves, Fred made his first solo jump in 1996. Since then, he has never looked back, continually pushing the boundaries of his jumps and inventing new tricks.
The Dream of Jumping from the Tallest Building
After completing his record-breaking jump from the Burj Khalifa, Fred revealed that it had always been his dream to leap from the tallest building in the world. Base jumping, for Fred, is not simply an act of insanity but a new form of sport. He tries to explain to people that it encompasses more than just a reckless pursuit. In fact, the term 'BASE' in BASE jumping stands for Building, Antenna, Span, and Earth, depicting the essence of this unique sport.
The Thrill of Flight
Fred admits that the greatest joy in his life comes from the sensation of flying, which he experiences through his passion for skydiving. His daring jump from the Burj Khalifa, alongside Vince Reffet, took place in April 2014. With the support of the Dubai Parachuting Association, they utilized a specially constructed platform at the pinnacle of the world's tallest building. They simultaneously jumped, glided around the structure, and then opened their parachutes. Clad in vibrant yellow suits with red smoke trails, the daredevils appeared like arrows with fiery tails hurtling towards the ground at incredible speeds. Spectators were left breathless by the spectacle, as extraordinary stunts are a hallmark of extreme sports.
World Champions and the 'Soul Flyers' Team
Fred and Vince, who have been working together for a long time, became World Skydiving Champions in 2004 in Brazil, and went on to win two more world championships in 2006 and 2008. Presently, both athletes are part of the 'Soul Flyers' team.
Although thrilled to have set a new world record, Fred considers the jump from the Burj Khalifa to be his greatest achievement to date. "Now, my dream has come true," he said. They are elated by their success, realizing that it will be difficult to surpass this record in the near future since there are no buildings taller than the Burj Khalifa.
