A Woman Who Got Her First Tattoo at 99

Mimi Rosenthal is an elderly American woman who got her first tattoo at the age of 99. She had been contemplating the idea of getting a tattoo for four years, and eventually decided to go for it. Soon after, she got a small blue butterfly tattoo on her leg.

Mimi's Changing Attitude Towards Tattoos

Mimi didn't always like tattoos. When her 17-year-old granddaughter, Meredith, got her first tattoo at the age of 85, Mimi strongly disapproved. However, as Meredith continued to get more tattoos, Mimi became more accepting of the idea of decorating her own body. When Mimi turned 95, she seriously considered getting a tattoo herself. It took her four years to come to a decision, and by then, she was already 99 years old. In the end, she went to a salon and got a small butterfly tattoo on her ankle. But Mimi didn't stop there. For her 100th birthday, she got a flower tattoo on her other leg, and at the age of 101, she got a sunflower tattoo on her arm.

The Growing Trend of Elderly Women Getting Tattoos

According to tattoo salon owner Michelle Gallo-Kohlas, the number of elderly women who want to get tattoos is increasing every year. It is no longer a surprise to see women in their 60s and 70s coming to the salon to get their first tattoo. Interestingly, Mimi herself was a bit disappointed with her first butterfly tattoo as she found it too small. This is why her second tattoo is much bigger in size. The decision to get a third tattoo on her arm was made because Mimi complained that it was difficult for her to see her leg tattoos.

Mimi's Response to the Critics

When asked why she wanted a tattoo and why she got one at her age, Mimi Rosenthal responds with a question of her own, "Why not?" She also jokes that her next tattoo will be on her buttocks. Unfortunately, Mimi's tattoos have received criticism from some who see them as sinful. She has faced a lot of criticism online. However, this doesn't stop Mimi. She is happily at an age where she can afford to be eccentric and daring. Mimi proudly admires her tattoos and willingly shows them to anyone interested. Moreover, it gives her something to talk about with her beloved granddaughter.
