Frederic Kanouté: A Franco-Malian Football Legend

Frederic Oumar Kanouté is a retired Franco-Malian professional footballer who played as a striker. He represented the Mali national team and was granted Malian citizenship in 1999.

Early Career at Olympique Lyonnais and West Ham United

Kanouté began his football journey with French club Olympique Lyonnais, making his debut in the 1997/98 season. He spent three seasons at Lyon, scoring 20 goals in 70 appearances. In 2000, his impressive performances caught the attention of West Ham United, who initially acquired him on loan. After scoring two goals in eight games, West Ham signed him permanently for a fee of £3.7 million.

Tottenham Hotspur Transition

Kanouté spent three seasons at West Ham, scoring 31 goals in 91 games. In 2003, he transferred to Tottenham Hotspur for £3.5 million. While he scored some memorable goals for Spurs, he also faced criticism for prioritizing international commitments over club interests.

Success at Sevilla

In 2005, Kanouté joined Sevilla for a fee of €6.5 million. The move proved to be transformative for his career. He won two UEFA Cups (2006, 2007), scored crucial goals in both finals, and also lifted the UEFA Super Cup, Supercopa de España, and two Copa del Rey trophies with the Spanish club. In 2007, he was named African Footballer of the Year.

Later Career and Retirement

Kanouté spent seven years at Sevilla, scoring 88 goals in 209 appearances. In 2012, he signed a 1.5-year contract with Chinese club Beijing Guoan. He retired from professional football in 2013.

Personal Life

At the age of 22, Frederic Kanouté converted to Islam. He is a devout Muslim and has been open about his faith.
