Frederick Wallace Smith was born on August 11, 1944, in the United States. He is the founder, chairman, and CEO of FedEx, better known as Federal Express. The company is a leader in the delivery industry, both in the United States and internationally.
Early Life and Education
Frederick Smith grew up in an affluent family, spending his childhood in a family mansion near the Mississippi River. His father, Frederick Smith Sr., was the founder of Dixie Greyhound Bus Lines and the Toddle House restaurant chain. However, his father passed away when Frederick was only four years old, and he was raised by his mother and uncles.
Even from a young age, Frederick had a passion for aviation and even obtained a pilot's license. He began his education at Memphis University School and continued his studies at Yale University in 1962. At Yale, Smith became a member of the Epsilon Kappa Delta fraternity and the Skull and Bones society. In 1966, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics.
During his time at Yale, Smith developed close friendships, including with George W. Bush. After completing his education, Smith joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Marine Corps Reserves for four years. He flew over 200 combat missions in Vietnam and was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star medals. Smith also received two Purple Hearts for his bravery and service.

While serving in the military, Frederick Smith meticulously planned his future business. In 1970, he started his career by purchasing a portion of Ark Aviation Sales' assets. On July 18, 1971, he founded Federal Express, which later became known as FedEx.
In 1973, the company expanded its operations, delivering packages between more than 25 cities and using jet aircraft for transportation. Over time, FedEx began delivering letters, parcels, and larger goods at faster speeds. The company gradually conquered the entire American market and aimed to expand beyond its borders.
Frederick Smith also played an active role in U.S. politics. In 2008, he vigorously supported Senator John McCain and served as co-chairman of his campaign committee.
