Childhood and Early Life

Freddie Gibbs was born on July 8, 1963, in Chester, Pennsylvania, just south of Philadelphia. She grew up in a tough neighborhood where she was constantly bullied by classmates and neighborhood children. Since her mother didn't teach her to back down, Freddie had to constantly run away from the bullies. When she wasn't running away from the young neighborhood thugs, Gibbs played basketball and participated in track and field in her school's sports team. Her excellent reaction and speed made her a valuable player, earning her the nickname "Cheetah."

Soon, she also became involved in martial arts, and that's when the bullies finally backed off for good.

Education and Sports Career

After high school, Gibbs became a student at Temple University in Philadelphia, where she received two athletic scholarships for basketball and track and field. She later transferred to Cabrini College, where she studied marketing and focused on maintaining good grades and excelling in basketball. Her results were so impressive that the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs invited Freddie to join the women's Olympic team. She also played professional basketball in Germany, achieving remarkable success during the season.

In recent years, Gibbs has been recognized for her achievements in her hometown. Her name has been immortalized in the Basketball Hall of Fame in her high school, and the school's track and field team has been named the "Chester Cheetah's" in her honor.

The Journey into Kickboxing

In 1990, after moving to North Hollywood, California, Freddie began training in kickboxing at the Muay Thai Academy of North Hollywood under the guidance of experienced masters. Transitioning to kickboxing was easy and natural for Gibbs since she had started learning the art of kickboxing at the age of 11 and earned her black belt at 23. Her first instructor was her uncle, William Groce, at a local karate club, and she also trained with masters Rick Berri and Nick Nichols.

Furthermore, Gibbs won her first World Taekwondo Championship held in St. Petersburg, Florida, defeating a two-time champion from Puerto Rico.

Rise to Fame

Freddie swiftly made a name for herself in the world of professional kickboxing, quickly gaining a reputation as a dangerous and fierce opponent. To attract attention, she fought and defeated male opponents. Her most famous fight was against Valerie Henin, which ended in a complete knockout victory for Gibbs.

After retiring from Muay Thai, Gibbs transitioned to professional boxing. Her debut fight took place in January 1997, where she won a decision victory against Nicaraguan athlete Maria Fortaleza Recinos. She proved herself to be a durable, fast, aggressive, and consistent female boxer.

On March 21, 1998, Gibbs suffered her first defeat in a match against Leah Mellinger, who managed to win despite blood pouring into her eyes. However, one loss was not enough to stop "The Cheetah," and after a brief hiatus, Freddie returned to boxing and achieved a series of significant victories.
