Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller was a German playwright, poet, and historian. He was born in an era of enlightened absolutism that was prevalent in Europe, even in small states like the Duchy of Württemberg, ruled by the corrupt despot Karl Eugen. Despite the harsh environment, Schiller was drawn to the beauty of literature and poetry. In his youth, he composed remarkable poems dedicated to Laura, believed to be Laura Petrarch, and Minna, possibly a product of his imagination. He also had a relationship with Countess Franziska von Hohenheim, the mistress of Duke Karl, who had a significant influence on him. She taught him to appreciate domestic comforts and helped him escape the despotism of the court. Schiller idealized her in his works, such as "Intrigue and Love," where she is portrayed as Lady Milford.

Later, Schiller met Charlotte von Wolzogen, with whom he fell passionately in love. However, Charlotte remained indifferent to his feelings. Despite this setback, Schiller gained fame as a playwright and writer, and his works found a new home, friends, and acclaim. He wrote "Don Carlos" before meeting Charlotte Marshall von Ostheim, a widow with a mysterious past. Schiller was captivated by her beauty and charm. However, his affections for her faded when he met her daughter, Maria Henriette. Schiller's attention shifted to Maria, and he forgot both his fleeting passion for Charlotte and his former love, Charlotte von Kalb.

In 1784, Schiller became acquainted with the von Lengefeld sisters, Charlotte and Caroline. He was initially attracted to Caroline but soon realized that Charlotte was the perfect match for him. Schiller admired her obedient and calm nature and considered her the ideal wife. Despite some initial opposition from Charlotte's mother, they eventually married in 1790. Charlotte fully dedicated herself to Schiller, supporting his artistic endeavors and providing him with emotional stability. She became his pillar of strength during his illness, and after his death, she focused on raising their children. Charlotte passed away in 1826, 21 years after Schiller's death, surrounded by her beloved children.
