Education and Academic Career

Oksana Zabuzhko received her philosophical degree (1982) and Ph.D. (1985) from Kyiv University. Her dissertation focused on "The Aesthetic Nature of Lyricism as a Direction in Art."

Literary Work

Zabuzhko established her literary career as a poet and writer. Her works have been widely acclaimed and translated into multiple languages.

Teaching and Research

After graduating, Zabuzhko became a professor of aesthetics at the Kyiv Conservatory. In 1989, she joined the Institute of Philosophy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine as a senior researcher. From 1992 to 1994, she taught Ukrainian Studies at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University as a guest lecturer.

Political Affiliation

In 1987, Zabuzhko joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). However, she has since withdrawn her membership and is an active critic of the current government.

Legal Controversy

In 2014, Viktor Medvedchuk, leader of the "Ukrainian Choice" movement, successfully sued Zabuzhko for libel. He accused her of spreading false information about his alleged involvement in the dispersal of the Euromaidan protests in 2013.
