Early Life and Education

Friedrich von Jolly was born on November 24, 1844, in Heidelberg, Germany. His father was Johann Philipp Gustav von Jolly, a physician, while his brothers, Ludwig and Julius von Jolly, also became prominent academics.

Jolly studied medicine in Munich and Göttingen before joining the Werneck asylum for the mentally ill in 1868. He completed his habilitation in 1871 at Würzburg University and became a professor of psychiatry and director of the Psychiatric Clinic in Strasbourg in 1873.

Professional Career

In 1890, Jolly was appointed to succeed Karl Westphal as the chair of psychiatry at Berlin University. He also assumed the directorship of the Psychiatric and Neurological Clinic at the same institution.

Under Jolly's leadership, the Psychiatric Clinic became a leading research and clinical center. He made significant contributions to the understanding of mental illness and the development of new treatment methods, particularly in the field of psychotherapy.

Jolly was recognized for his exceptional teaching abilities and his dedication to patient care. He was the author of numerous books and articles on psychiatry, including a widely-used textbook on the subject.

Later Years and Legacy

Jolly retired from the University of Berlin in 1902 due to health reasons. He passed away in Berlin on January 4, 1904.
