Early Life and Education
Christian Friedrich Heinrich Wimmer, a Silesian botanist and schoolmaster, was born in Breslau on October 30, 1803. He attended the Friedrich Gymnasium and enrolled in the University of Breslau in 1821, where he studied philology and natural sciences.
Teaching Career
From 1826, Wimmer taught at the Friedrich Gymnasium, becoming a professor in 1835 and later serving as its director in 1843. In 1841, he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
Honors and Recognition
In 1853, Wimmer received an honorary doctorate from the University of Breslau. In 1863, he was appointed head of the school inspection for the district and became an advocate for educational reform in Breslau.
Botanical Studies
Beyond his teaching responsibilities, Wimmer had a keen interest in botany. He studied the flora of Silesia and researched the history of botany and ancient Greek concepts on plant classification. He published several works on the writings of Aristotle and Theophrastus.
Later Years and Legacy
In his later years, Wimmer suffered from asthma. He passed away on March 12, 1868. His herbarium was donated to the University of Breslau (WRSL), preserving his botanical legacy.
