Emmanuel Drake del Castillo, a French botanist with Spanish ancestry, was born in Paris. His lineage traces back to Cuba around 1800 before his family settled in Spain. As a student, he studied under Louis Édouard Bureau (1830-1918), a renowned professor at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris.

Exploration of Pacific Flora

Drake del Castillo's extensive work, "Illustrationes Florae Insulae Maris Pacifici" ("Illustrated Floras of the Islands of the Pacific Ocean"), was published between 1886 and 1892. This meticulously illustrated work showcased his in-depth research on the diverse flora of French Polynesia.

"Flore de la Polynésie française" and Beyond

In 1893, Drake del Castillo's influential publication, "Flore de la Polynésie française" ("Flora of French Polynesia"), was released in Paris. His contributions extended beyond the Pacific flora, as he also dedicated his efforts to studying the flora of Madagascar.
