Early Life and Education

Born Friedrich Salomon Perls on July 8, 1893, in Berlin, Fritz Perls was a German psychologist and psychiatrist. He initially studied medicine and received his doctorate in 1920. During this time, he underwent psychoanalysis with renowned analysts Karen Horney, Helene Deutsch, Ernest Jones, and Wilhelm Reich.

Psychoanalytic Practice and Emigration

Perls began his psychoanalytic practice in 1926 and established himself in Frankfurt, Vienna, and Berlin. However, in 1933, due to the rise of Nazism, he fled Germany for the Netherlands. With Jones's support, he later moved to South Africa in 1935, where he founded the Psychoanalytic Institute in Johannesburg.

Founding of Gestalt Therapy

Perls played a pivotal role in the development of Gestalt therapy. In 1946, he relocated to the United States, where he founded the Gestalt Therapy Institute in 1952. This new approach to therapy emphasized the importance of self-awareness, experiential learning, and the integration of bodily and psychological experiences.

Major Works and Legacy

Perls authored several influential books, including:
Ego, Hunger, and Aggression (1947)
Gestalt Therapy (1951)
In and Out of the Garbage Pail (1969)
Gestalt Therapy Verbatim (1969)

His writings continue to shape the field of psychotherapy today. Perls passed away on March 14, 1970, in Chicago, leaving behind a lasting legacy as the founder of Gestalt therapy.
