Early LifeFritz Wunderlich, born Friedrich Karl Otto Wunderlich, was a German opera singer (lyric tenor). He was born in 1930 in Kusel, a town in the Rhine-Palatinate region of Germany. At the age of five, Wunderlich lost his father to suicide due to financial struggles. Coming from a musical family, he started learning and playing various musical instruments at a young age. His exceptional talent led him to become a student at the Freiburg Conservatory, where his remarkable voice was recognized.
Opera Career
While still a student, Wunderlich made his opera debut in a production of Mozart's "The Magic Flute". In 1955, at the age of 25, he was invited to join the Württemberg State Theatre in Stuttgart, one of the most renowned opera theaters at the time. Wunderlich maintained a long-standing relationship with this theater, even performing there after he began working at the Munich Opera in 1958.
Recognition and Repertoire
In 1959, Wunderlich performed for the first time at the Salzburg Festival, and soon he was hailed as one of the most significant lyric tenors of his time. He was particularly praised for his performances in Mozart's repertoire. From 1960 onwards, Wunderlich regularly appeared at the Bavarian State Opera, and from 1963 at the Vienna State Opera.
