Biography of Futoshi Matsunaga

Futoshi Matsunaga was a Japanese serial killer who was charged with six intentional murders and one unintentional murder, including the killings of children. He was active from 1996 to 1998, with the help of Junko Ogata. Matsunaga's crimes were so brutal that the press decided not to publish all the details of his crimes, although some writers, such as Ryuzo Saki, did not hold back.

Early Life

Matsunaga was born in Kokura Kita-ku, Kitakyūshū, Fukuoka Prefecture and grew up in Yanagawa. He was known for his charisma and disregard for school rules, which led to him being transferred to another school due to a romance with a senior student. At the age of 19, Matsunaga got married, and soon after, he had a son.

Relationship with Junko Ogata

In October 1982, Matsunaga began a relationship with Junko Ogata. Although Ogata was not his only lover, Matsunaga planned to marry her. Initially, Ogata's mother, Shizumi, opposed their relationship, considering Matsunaga a sadist. However, she eventually fell under Matsunaga's charm. In February 1985, Ogata attempted suicide, but Matsunaga convinced her that her own family hated her. Shortly after, Matsunaga and Ogata moved in together.

Life of Crime

Two years later, Matsunaga started his own company and began engaging in fraud and extortion, which brought him substantial income. In 1992, Matsunaga and Ogata nearly got arrested but managed to escape. However, the police issued a search warrant for them. Matsunaga's first victim was a married woman whom he convinced to leave her husband and move in with him and "his sister" Ogata in April 1993. In September 1993, the woman's child died under mysterious circumstances, and two more children were taken away a month later by the father and grandfather. Matsunaga extorted approximately 12 million yen from the woman, who died in March 1994. The police, however, could not prove Matsunaga's involvement in her murder.

Targeting Kumio Toraya and His Daughter

Matsunaga then turned his attention to Kumio Toraya and his daughter, blackmailing them with compromising information from Toraya's past. He managed to extract confessions from Toraya about crimes that the police had failed to prove. Matsunaga kept Toraya and his daughter captive in his room, torturing Toraya with electric shocks and forcing him to eat his own feces. On February 26, 1996, Toraya died. Matsunaga convinced Toraya's daughter that she was responsible for her father's death, and with the help of Ogata, disposed of the remains.

Continued Crimes and Capture

Afterwards, Matsunaga targeted a woman and her daughter, following his plan of capturing them and extorting money. However, the woman managed to escape by jumping out of a second-story window. She was mistakenly believed to be insane and was sent to a mental institution. In April 1997, Ogata went to work and never returned. Matsunaga initially blackmailed her family and then staged his own suicide. Believing in his death, Ogata returned home only to meet the fake deceased. Matsunaga continued to torment Ogata and her family, extracting a significant sum of money from Shizumi and seducing Ogata's married sister, Rieko. At Matsunaga's request, Rieko and her husband Kazuya killed Shizumi. On February 10, 1998, Kazuya was starved to death by Matsunaga and Ogata. The next victims of the maniac were five-year-old Yuki and ten-year-old Aya, the children of Kazuya and Rieko.

Arrest and Conviction

On January 30, 2002, Kumio's daughter managed to escape from Matsunaga but was captured again and received an electric shock as punishment. However, she remained determined to be free and escaped again on March 6, 2002. This time, she reached the police, and the next day, both Ogata and Matsunaga were arrested. On September 28, 2005, Matsunaga and Ogata were sentenced to hanging, although Ogata's sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment.
