Early Life and Education

Gabriel Balart y Teruel, a Spanish composer and conductor, was born in Barcelona in 1824. His musical education began in his hometown, where he studied piano and violin. In 1842, he traveled to Paris to hone his skills as a composer under the guidance of Delphin Alard and Michele Carafa.

Opera and Early Career

After completing his studies, Balart relocated to Milan in 1849. His operas gained recognition across Europe, securing him a substantial reputation. In 1853, he returned to Barcelona and held the position of conductor at the renowned Gran Teatre del Liceu from 1853 to 1874.

Later Career and Legacy

In 1886, Balart took on the role of professor of composition and harmony at the Barcelona Conservatory. In 1889, he became the second rector in the institution's history. While primarily known for his zarzuelas and dance music, Balart also penned five symphonies, all of which were program music.

Family and Personal Life

Balart's sons, Gabriel (1877-1966) and Jose (1883-1904), carried the surname Balart i Sobrevals. Gabriel was a violinist at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, while Jose showed promise as a pianist.
