Gabriel Landeskog is a Swedish professional ice hockey player. He currently serves as the captain for the NHL team, Colorado Avalanche.
Early Career
Gabriel began his sporting career with Hammarby IF before moving on to Djurgårdens IF, where he had a highly successful season. On February 21, 2009, at the age of just 16 years and 90 days, Landeskog made his debut in a match against Brynas. This made him the youngest player in the history of the team and one of the youngest in the league overall. He earned his first point in the Elitserien in his second game on February 24.
Junior Career
In the first round of the Canadian Hockey League draft, Landeskog was selected by the Plymouth Whalers, but his rights were later transferred to the Kitchener Rangers on August 4, 2009. By the end of the 2009-2010 season, Gabriel was ranked third in the league's rookie scoring and goals. He also played a key role in helping his team reach the finals of the playoffs, finishing as the top-scoring rookie in the process.
NHL Career
In the NHL 2011 draft, Landeskog was selected second overall by the Colorado Avalanche. This was a significant achievement as only two Swedes had been selected second overall in NHL history, and only one had been chosen first overall. He joined the Colorado Avalanche for the 2011-2012 season, becoming the first European player to serve as the team's captain in franchise history.
International Career
Landeskog represented Sweden in various international competitions. In 2011, he was named alternate captain for the Swedish junior national team at the World Junior Championships. In 2012 and 2013, he served as alternate captain for the senior national team at the World Championships. He also represented Sweden at the 2014 Winter Olympics, where the team won a silver medal.
Despite facing injuries during his NHL career, Landeskog has continued to excel on the ice. He signed a seven-year contract extension worth $39 million and has consistently been a key player for the Colorado Avalanche. Gabriel Landeskog's talent, leadership, and dedication have made him one of the most successful Swedish hockey players of his generation.
