Biography of Gaetano Donizetti

Gaetano Donizetti was an Italian composer born on November 29, 1797, in Bergamo. Despite facing parental opposition to pursuing a career in music, Donizetti enlisted in the Austrian army in order to pursue his musical ambitions. During his time in the army, he found enough free time to study composition and even wrote his first opera in 1818.

The successful staging of his fourth opera allowed Donizetti to leave the military and he spent many years earning a living by composing operas for various Italian theaters. In 1835, Donizetti began teaching polyphony at the Royal Music College in Milan and two years later became its director.

Later, he lived in Paris, but in 1845 he suffered a stroke. He was transported to Italy for treatment, but the efforts of the doctors proved unsuccessful. Donizetti passed away in Bergamo on April 8, 1848.

Donizetti's most famous works include "L'Elisir d'amore" (1832), "Lucia di Lammermoor" (1835), "La Fille du rgiment" (1840), "Linda di Chamounix" (1842), and "Don Pascuale" (1843). "Lucia di Lammermoor" is considered the pinnacle of his creativity, while "Don Pascuale" and "L'Elisir d'amore" are excellent comedic operas.

In addition to his 65 operas and operettas, Donizetti's musical legacy includes two masses, several church compositions, 12 string quartets, cantatas, songs, and orchestral and piano works.
