Gamar Almaszadeh: A Pioneering Azerbaijani Ballerina

Gamar Almaszadeh was an acclaimed Azerbaijani ballet dancer, choreographer, and teacher. As the first ballerina of Azerbaijan, she played a pivotal role in shaping the nation's dance scene.

Early Life and Training

Born into a humble family in Azerbaijan, Almaszadeh's passion for ballet emerged at the tender age of six. She began her training at a private studio, which later became the Baku School of Choreography. In 1930, upon completing her education, she joined the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater named after M.F. Akhundov, where she concurrently pursued her teaching certificate.

Breakthrough Performance and International Recognition

Almaszadeh's breakout role came in 1932 when she performed in Reinhold Glière's opera "Shah-Senem." Her talent caught the attention of the Leningrad Choreographic School, where she enrolled in the class of Maria Romanova-Ulanova, the mother of renowned ballerina Galina Ulanova.

After returning to Baku in 1936, Almaszadeh established the Azerbaijan State Song and Dance Ensemble within the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic. She embarked on ethnographic expeditions to collect traditional dance forms for the ensemble's repertoire, promoting Azerbaijan's rich dance heritage.

Educating the Next Generation

In 1939, Almaszadeh commenced her teaching career at the Baku School of Choreography, eventually becoming its director and serving until the late 1990s. She actively participated in nurturing the talents of aspiring dancers.

Dance Diplomacy and Collaborations

Almaszadeh's artistry extended beyond Azerbaijan's borders. She performed in prestigious venues in France, India, and Nepal. In 1970, the Iraqi Ministry of Culture invited her to Baghdad to establish the Iraqi National Dance Ensemble, fostering cultural exchange and artistic collaboration.

Personal Life and Legacy

Almaszadeh married composer Afrasiyab Badalbeyli in 1931, but their marriage ended shortly after their joint work on the ballet "The Maiden Tower." She was laid to rest in the Alley of Honor in Baku, a testament to her profound impact on Azerbaijani arts and culture.
