Biography of Gamida Omarova

Gamida Omarova, an Azerbaijani actress and People's Artist of Azerbaijan (2005), was born into a family of foreign language teachers. Her parents met while studying at the same university. Unfortunately, three of their children died in infancy. When their fourth child, a girl, was born, the parents embarked on a pilgrimage to the "Sophie-Gamid" shrine near Kazakh, and named the child after the shrine - Gamida. Omarova's parents divorced in 1960, and her father remarried and moved to his native Kazakhstan. Omarova grew up with her mother and grandmother in Baku.

Early Life and Education

After completing secondary school, Omarova enrolled in the Philology Faculty of Azerbaijan State University. In 1975, during her first year, Omarova passed an exam and was selected as one of the 15 out of 300 applicants to be admitted to the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography. From 1977 onwards, Omarova appeared in over 30 films, becoming the most successful Azerbaijani actress of the 1980s. She gained recognition outside of Azerbaijan for her role as Telli in the film "Do Not Be Afraid, I Am with You" (1982, directed by Yu. Gusman). In 1988, Omarova was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR.
