Early Life and Naval Career

Gunichi Mikawa(August 29, 1888 - February 25, 1981) was a distinguished Japanese admiral who served in the Imperial Japanese Navy. He was born on August 29, 1888, and entered the navy as a midshipman on July 18, 1910.

Throughout his career, Mikawa held various positions on surface ships. He completed torpedo and artillery courses in 1914 and graduated from the Naval War College in 1917. From 1918 to 1920, he served as part of a diplomatic mission to France.

Senior Command and Advisorship

In 1920, Mikawa became the chief navigational officer on several cruisers. Later, he served as an advisor to Admiral Kato Hiroharu in 1926 and to Admiral Takabe Takeo in 1927-28. From February 7, 1930, to December 1, 1930, he was appointed naval attaché in France.

Upon his return to Japan, Mikawa became the chief instructor at the Naval War College on December 1, 1931. He assumed various command roles, including that of commander of the heavy cruiser "Aoba" in 1930, the heavy cruiser "Chokai" in 1934, and the battleship "Kirishima" in 1935.

Command and Operations in World War II

From 1936 to 1937, Mikawa served as chief of staff of the 2nd Fleet. On November 15, 1937, he was appointed chief of the 2nd Section of the Naval General Staff.

Battle of Midway:In 1942, Mikawa participated in the Battle of Midway as commander of the 7th, 5th, and 3rd Cruiser Squadrons from November 1939 to July 1942.

Command of the 8th Fleet:On July 14, 1942, Mikawa became the commander of the 8th Fleet, responsible for operations in the Southeast Asia region. He led the attack on the American fleet at Guadalcanal on July 7, 1942, sinking four cruisers and damaging another.

Post-Guadalcanal and End of War:Mikawa became an advisor to the Naval General Staff in 1943. In 1944, he assumed command of the 2nd Southern Expeditionary Fleet and later held several other high-ranking positions in the navy. Mikawa retired from active service in 1944 and passed away on February 25, 1981.
