Early Life and Education

Elliott Pompey Harold Edward (19 June 1878 – 23 March 1931) was an Australian army general who served in the Boer War and World War I. Born to a farmer in Victoria, he attended Ballarat College and the University of Melbourne.

Military Career in the Boer War and Early Years

Upon the outbreak of the Boer War (1899-1902), Elliott enlisted as a private in the 4th Victorian Contingent. His bravery in battle earned him promotions to corporal and then lieutenant. After returning to Australia, he completed his university studies in 1906 and briefly practiced law. In 1904, he joined the 5th Australian Infantry Regiment as a lieutenant and became its deputy commander in 1911.

World War I and Gallantry at Gallipoli

In August 1914, Elliott's regiment was deployed to Egypt and then to Gallipoli. He distinguished himself as a courageous but ambitious commander. In January 1916, he was appointed commander of the 1st Brigade and later the 15th Brigade. Despite his bravery, Elliott's independent streak often led him to disregard orders from higher command.

Leadership in France and a Pivotal Moment

In June 1916, Elliott's brigade was transferred to Northern France. However, his initial attack resulted in nearly a third of his men being lost. In October 1916, he participated in the Somme Offensive. In September 1917, Elliott's successful defense against relentless enemy attacks helped stabilize the front and avert a possible catastrophe for the Allies.

Command of a Division and Return to Civilian Life

In 1918, Elliott commanded a division. After returning to Australia in June 1919, he resigned from the army and established a legal practice. He was elected as a senator in the National Senate. While serving in the Senate, he resumed command of the 15th Brigade in September 1919. In 1925, he was re-elected as a senator and appointed commander of the 3rd Division.

Tragic End

Elliott Pompey Harold Edward tragically ended his own life in 1931. His legacy as a brave and independent military commander remains etched in Australian history.
