Gary Hackney: A Life of Overcoming Adversity
Early Life and LossesGary Hackney, a thyroid cancer survivor, has faced numerous challenges throughout his life. Two tragic events shook him to his core: the death of his son in a drunk driving accident in 1989 and the loss of his grandson in a pedestrian accident in 2007.
Battling Health Issues
Gary's health also presented obstacles. He has undergone nearly 30 surgeries, including partial colon resection, knee replacement, and appendectomy. But his most harrowing battle was against cancer.
Diagnosis of Thyroid Cancer
In 2005, Gary experienced persistent throat pain. After numerous tests and consultations, he was diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma in 2006.
Treatment at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA)
Disappointed with his local treatment options, Gary sought help at CTCA. He was impressed by the compassionate and comprehensive care provided by his oncologist, Dr. Petra Ketterl.
Manual Therapy and Lymphedema
Dr. Ketterl identified Gary's lymphedema and prescribed manual therapy to manage it. This specialized treatment helped reduce the swelling and improve his overall condition.
Ongoing Care and Support
Gary continues to receive regular manual therapy and attends appointments with both Dr. Ketterl and his local oncologist. He is part of CTCA's Cancer FightersSM program, a support group for cancer survivors.
Volunteerism and Advocacy
Inspired by his own experience, Gary became a volunteer at CTCA. He shares his story and provides support to patients and staff. He also participates in charitable events and advocates for increased cancer awareness and support.
A Legacy of Resilience
Gary Hackney's journey is a testament to his indomitable spirit and the power of support. Having faced adversity with courage and determination, he now dedicates his time to helping others navigate their own cancer journeys.
