Biography of Ben Underwood

Early Life and Diagnosis

Ben Underwood was born in 1992 in Riverside, California. He was a healthy baby, and his mother Aquanetta did not have to take him to the doctor often. However, Aquanetta noticed that Ben's right eye had an unnatural shine. Upon closer inspection, she realized that his eyes resembled those of a cat in the headlights. One day, Ben woke up with a white spot on his pupil, and his mother realized with horror that he could not see. Ben was immediately taken to an ophthalmologist who diagnosed him with retinoblastoma, a form of eye cancer. Unfortunately, the cancer affected both of Ben's eyes, and his right eye had to be removed. He underwent months of chemotherapy and radiation therapy in an attempt to save his left eye, but eventually, it had to be removed as well.

Learning to "See" with Sound

After losing his sight, Ben's mother and his older siblings became his main support system. They helped him navigate his new life and allowed him time to understand and adapt to his surroundings. Aquanetta explained to Ben that despite his inability to see with his eyes, he had other senses such as touch, smell, and hearing that could help him "see" the world. Growing up, Ben refused to let his blindness stop him from participating in typical childhood activities. He played with other children, learned to ride a bike, climbed trees, and even started playing video games. Despite having both of his eyes removed, Ben amazed doctors with his ability to perform tasks that typically require sight.

Sonar Vision and Recognition

As doctors marveled at Ben's abilities, they began investigating the reason behind his remarkable vision. They discovered that Ben possessed a form of sonar vision, similar to that of bats. His brain had learned to translate sound into visual information, allowing him to "see" using echolocation. While doctors continued to study this phenomenon, Ben lived a normal life, playing basketball, riding his BMX bike, rollerblading, and using a computer. However, he still had to take care of his prosthetic eyes, washing them regularly and giving his eye sockets occasional rest.

Beyond Blindness

Ben's extraordinary story caught the attention of filmmakers, who featured him in several documentaries. He appeared as a guest on numerous talk shows and radio programs. Besides his incredible abilities, Ben was an intellectually curious teenager. In the fourth grade, he began writing a novel, and later he taught himself Japanese. Another unique aspect of Ben's perception was his ability to judge people based solely on their words and actions rather than their appearance. He saw people from the inside out, and physical beauty or deformity held no significance for him.
