Biography of Gaston Gaudio
Gaston Gaudio, nicknamed El Gato (The Cat), is an Argentine tennis player. He was born on December 9, 1978, in the suburbs of Buenos Aires. Gaudio started playing tennis at the age of six and achieved his first victories in 2002 when he won the Masters series tournaments of the Association of Tennis Professionals in Barcelona and Majorca.
First Grand Slam Victory
In a thrilling final match against his compatriot Guillermo Coria, Gaudio won his first Grand Slam tournament. The match lasted for almost four hours, and Gaudio's victory in Paris allowed him to climb an impressive 34 places in the world rankings, breaking into the top ten tennis players. Overwhelmed by his unexpected success, Gaudio repeatedly exclaimed, "It's not me, it's not me. It's impossible." The odds were in favor of Coria, who was the third-ranked player in the world at the time.
Psychological Challenges
Despite his achievements, experts have noted a significant drawback in Gaudio's game – he is prone to psychological breakdowns. For example, he can fight on the court until his legs cramp and return dead shots, but then suddenly collapse right before everyone's eyes. This was evident in the Davis Cup semifinals when Argentina played against Spain. Gaudio lost two singles matches, and after the defeat, he contemplated leaving tennis altogether. "I have thought about it millions of times. Sometimes the agony you go through on the court makes you think it's better to quit," says Gaudio. As a result, he now works with a psychologist, and Gaudio is open about seeking professional help to overcome his mental challenges.
