Biography of Gautam Singhania
Gautam Singhania, an Indian businessman, is the chairman and managing director of Raymond Group, the largest textile manufacturer in India. Under his leadership, Raymond Group has also become one of the major players in the retail clothing market, owning a number of well-known brands.
Born on September 9, 1965, Gautam Singhania comes from a wealthy industrialist family. He joined the family business, JK Group, in 1986. Later, he started working at another family enterprise, Raymond Group, becoming a director of the company in 1990 and assuming the position of managing director in July 1999. In September 2000, Singhania became the chairman of the company.
During his tenure, Singhania oversaw a rigorous restructuring of the company, leading to the sale of non-core businesses such as synthetic production, steel, and cement. His decision to focus on textile manufacturing, the development of several renowned brands, contraception and sexually transmitted disease prevention (KamaSutra condoms), cosmetics, and toiletries proved to be successful. He also focused on seeking international partners for Raymond Group, including collaborations with Belgian company UCO (denim production) and Italian company Gruppo Zambaiti (men's shirts).
Gautam Singhania is married to Nawaz Modi Singhania, and they have a daughter named Niharika, born in December 2005. Since a young age, Singhania has been suffering from vitiligo, a skin pigmentation disorder that began progressing when he was in his thirties as a side effect of medication.
Among Gautam Singhania's hobbies are fast cars, yachts, airplanes, and nightclubs. He has driven a Ferrari 360 Modena at the Formula 1 race in France, touring all of Europe. He has also participated in the CannonBall Run as a driver of a Lamborghini Gallardo. Thanks to Singhania, India saw the establishment of its first supercar club. He owns the luxurious three-deck yacht "M Y Ashena," built with Burmese teakwood and designed by shipbuilders from Gujarat. In addition, Singhania owns the yachts "Moonraker," an Arabic dhow named "Shazma," speedboats named after James Bond movies ("Octopussy," "Goldfinger," "Thunderball," "Golden Eye"), as well as other boats like "Smokin Joe" and "Raymond." He also owns a Challenger 604 aircraft and helicopters. In 2005, he opened a nightclub called "Poison" in Bandra.
