Jewish-born Mykhailo Bokshai studied art in Budapest's Higher School of Fine Arts from 1931-1933.

After joining the Artistic College in Kishinev in 1940, Bokshai returned to the city after serving in the labor army during the war. He became a member of the Union of Artists of the Moldavian SSR.
