At the age of 20, Both embarked on an extensive journey that took him through France and Italy. He spent a considerable period in Rome, where he became an esteemed member of the prestigious Accademia di San Luca.

Artistic Style

Both's paintings are characterized by their idyllic depictions of romanticized Italian landscapes. He often incorporated figures of peasants, shepherds, and travelers into his compositions. The golden hues prevalent in his works earned him the reputation of introducing "sunlight" into Dutch landscape painting.

Collaboration and Impact

Both collaborated with his brother, Andries Both, as well as other notable artists such as Cornelis van Poelenburgh and Nicolaes Knüpfer.
