Early Life and Career
Gerard van Dijk was born on August 15, 1923, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. During World War II, he joined the youth ranks of AFC Ajax, making his debut on September 12, 1943, against Emma.
Playing Career
Van Dijk played for Ajax from 1943 to 1957, making 325 league appearances and scoring 89 goals. He was a key part of Ajax's championship-winning teams in 1947 and 1957, and the league's top scorer in the 1950/51 season. He captained the team in his final years as a player.
International Career
Van Dijk made his debut for the Netherlands national team on September 21, 1947, against Switzerland. He played in two more games for his country, a draw against Belgium in 1948 and a loss to Norway in 1949.
Coaching Career
After retiring from playing, Van Dijk became an assistant coach at Ajax and later took over as manager of AFC, an amateur club. In 1960, he led AFC to the second division championship and promotion to the first division. He remained manager of AFC until 1964, when illness forced him to step down temporarily.
Death and Legacy
Gerard van Dijk passed away on May 29, 2005, at the age of 81. He is remembered as a talented striker and a successful coach.
