Early Life and Chess Training
Gennady Gutman was born on November 1, 1973, in Ukraine. He began playing chess at the age of seven under the tutelage of Petr Arkhipovich Boyko, who guided him for eight years. Gutman later trained with several coaches, including Grandmaster Igor Platonov of the USSR, who played a pivotal role in shaping his chess skills.
Competitive Career
As a junior, Gutman participated in numerous youth tournaments, showcasing impressive results and a keen interest in the game. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he experienced his most successful period as a professional chess player. He shared 1st-6th place at an international tournament in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, alongside top Kazakh and English players. As part of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast team, he earned bronze at the II Ukrainian Summer Sports Games in 1999.
Gutman has been a regular participant in the Czech Open in Pardubice, Czech Republic. He won third place in the tournament's A section in 2003 and has achieved multiple victories and podium finishes in various events within the festival, including active chess and blitz.
Coaching and Legacy
In 1994, Gutman began working as a chess coach. He has nurtured a generation of strong chess players from Dnipropetrovsk, including future international grandmasters D. Maksimov, Y. Zinchenko, and A. Karlovich. His teaching methods have made him an inspiration and a role model for many of his students.
In 2001, Gutman founded his own chess school at the Jewish Community Center in Dnipropetrovsk. After the passing of A. Moroz, Gutman organized memorial tournaments in his honor and became the director-organizer of the first international chess festival "Dnipropetrovsk Autumn" in 2012, also dedicated to Moroz's memory.
