Biography of Gennadiy Knishov

Gennadiy Knishov was born on August 6, 1934, in Debaltseve, Donetsk Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. He is of Russian descent and is the son of Vasily Fedotovich (1902-1993) and Klavdia Pavlovna (1908-1995). His wife's name is Alla Iosifovna (1936), who is now retired, and they have a daughter named Natalia (1958) who works as a physician and is the head of the physiotherapy department.

Education and Early Career

Knishov attended Donetsk Medical Institute, where he graduated from the medical faculty in 1958. He then went on to pursue further studies and completed his candidate's dissertation on "Surgical Tactics for Mitral Stenosis Complicated by Left Atrial Thrombosis" in 1965. Later, he earned his doctoral degree with a dissertation on "Mitral Valve Replacement in Acquired Insufficiency."
After completing his education, Knishov worked as a surgeon at the Donetsk Oblast Clinical Hospital from 1958 to 1962.

Professional Achievements

In 1962, Knishov began his career in academic research as a Ph.D. student at the Department of Cardiac Surgery in the Kiev Research Institute of Tuberculosis and Thoracic Surgery. Over the years, he held various positions within the institute, including Junior Researcher, Senior Researcher, and Head of the Department of Acquired Heart Defects from 1971 to 1979. In 1979, he became the Head of the Department of Coronary Insufficiency and from 1980 to 1983, he served as the Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs at the Kiev Research Institute of Tuberculosis and Thoracic Surgery.

From 1983 to 1988, Knishov worked as the Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs at the Kiev Research Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery. In 1988, he became the Director of the N. Amosov Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. He also served as the Head of the Department of X-ray Surgical Treatment Methods for Acute Coronary Insufficiency from 1993.

Knishov's contributions to the field of cardiovascular surgery are significant. He has performed over 5,000 heart surgeries and has authored nearly 400 scientific publications, including co-authoring the textbook "Hospital Surgery" (1999) and publishing six monographs, including "Cybernetics of Cardiac Surgery" (1984), "Acquired Heart Defects" (1997, Pel.), "Heart Failure" (2000), and "Blood Vessels, Renin-Angiotensin System, and Arterial Hypertension" (2000). He has also been granted 12 inventions and has supervised the training of 21 candidates and 10 doctors of science.

Awards and Recognition

Knishov's remarkable contributions to the field of medicine have earned him numerous accolades. He was elected as a Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 1992 and received the title of Honored Scientist and Engineer of Ukraine in 1994. He is the recipient of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology in 1988 and 2005. In 1999, he was awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 5th Class. In 2004, Knishov was recognized as a Hero of Ukraine, and he received the Order of the State.
