Early Life and Education

Leonid Semenovich Barbarash was born on June 22, 1941, in Babushkino, Moscow Oblast.His father, Semyon Semenovich Barbarash, was born in 1904, while his mother, Irina Davydovna Form, was born in 1913. Leonid married Nina Alekseevna Barbarash, who was born in 1939, and they have two daughters: Olga Leonidovna Barbarash (born 1961) and Svetlana Leonidovna Barbarash (born 1971).

Medical Career

Barbarash graduated from Kemerovo Medical Institute in 1964 and worked as a surgeon at the central district hospital in Kemerovo.From 1967 to 1969, he was a clinical resident in the Department of Faculty Surgery at Kemerovo Medical Institute. He then became an aspirant in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Central Institute of Postgraduate Education for Physicians (TSOLIUV) from 1970 to 1972. In 1972, Barbarash defended his candidate's dissertation on "Transplantation of Aortic Xenoclapan Valves of the Heart."

Academic and Research Work

From 1973, Barbarash worked at the Department of Surgical Diseases No. 1 at Kemerovo State Medical Academy as an assistant and later an associate professor.In 1985, he defended his doctoral dissertation on "Experimental and Clinical Assessment of the Application of New Models of Xenobioprostheses in Surgical Treatment of Mitral Heart Disease."

In 1990, Leonid Semenovich became the head of the cardiology center he founded in Kemerovo.Since 2000, he has led both the Scientific and Production Problem Laboratory for Reconstructive Surgery of Heart and Vessels with a Clinic of SB RAMS and the Kuzbass Scientific Center, a branch of SB RAMS, since 2001.

Barbarash's primary research focus has been on the development of fundamental and applied problems in the surgery of acquired heart defects since the 1970s.The results of his multi-year scientific research in developing original models of biological heart and vessel valves led to the establishment of Russia's first enterprise for producing bioprosthetic heart and vessel valves in Kemerovo in 1987.

Achievements and Honors

Barbarash's research has received widespread recognition at conferences and congresses nationwide and abroad.He represented Russian science at international congresses on cardiovascular surgery and was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in 1999.

Barbarash has been awarded numerous honors, including:
