He earned a bachelor's degree in American literature from Stanford University in 1967 and a doctorate in English literature from the University of Washington in 1974. In the same year, he became an English professor at Olivet College in Michigan.

In 1978, Moore and his family moved to Palo Alto, California, where he began working in training, sales, and marketing.
