USABiography of Dr. Jeffrey Tabin - An Ophthalmologist Dedicated to Helping the Poor
Dr. Jeffrey Tabin is an ophthalmologist and mountaineer who has dedicated his life to helping the poor. He is the founder of the 'Himalayan Cataract Project', an initiative aimed at assisting impoverished populations with cataract-related issues. Instead of pursuing a lucrative career practicing medicine in a prosperous country like America, Dr. Tabin chose a different path. He decided to utilize his knowledge and skills as a doctor to provide selfless aid to those in need.
As the head of the Division of International Ophthalmology based in Salt Lake City, Utah, Dr. Tabin's work does not confine him to an office. On the contrary, he spends most of his time traveling to the most remote corners of the world with one sole purpose - to restore sight to people. Cataracts, one of the leading causes of blindness in the elderly, affect an estimated 20 million people worldwide each year. Unfortunately, 90 percent of these cases occur in developing countries due to a lack of financial means for timely treatment and surgery. Dr. Tabin focuses on combating this particular cause of blindness, personally reaching out to his elderly patients.
Over 20 years ago, Jeffrey first visited the Himalayas as a young mountaineer who conquered the unconquerable mountain. During his journey, he witnessed the living conditions of the people in Nepal, the prevalence of blindness, and the dire need for healthcare. This experience inspired him to think about what he could personally do to restore health and vision to these individuals. In 1995, he conducted his first cataract removal surgery, and since then, he has traveled the world, reaching the poorest corners and providing sight to those who cannot afford it. His unique surgery costs only 11 dollars, and he has performed thousands of such operations.
Jeffrey Tabin is often referred to as the "Miracle Doctor," and he has been personally thanked by the Dalai Lama. However, his ultimate reward comes in the form of smiles on the faces of his patients, who regain their vision after years of darkness. Each patient only requires 10 minutes of Dr. Tabin's time, which is enough to restore their sight. Despite his demanding work, Tabin has not abandoned his hobby of mountaineering. After conquering yet another peak, he descends to where his blind or visually impaired patients eagerly await him.
In academia, Dr. Tabin serves as a lecturer in eye surgery at the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He obtained his master's degree from Oxford University and his doctorate from Harvard Medical School. His longtime colleague in Nepal is Dr. Sanduk Ruit, with whom he developed their unique cataract removal surgeries.
