Georg Jenatsch: A Swiss Political Figure

Georg Jenatsch was a prominent Swiss political figure who played a significant role during the Thirty Years' War.

A Man Divided

Born in Upper Engadine, a region known for its religious divisions, Jenatsch found himself torn between the pro-French, Protestant Salis family and the pro-Milanese, Catholic Planta family. His allegiance lay with the former.

The Triggering Event

The brutal massacre of Protestants in the Valtellina region of Italy heightened tensions to the breaking point. Jenatsch responded by assassinating Pompeii von Planta, the head of the opposing faction, and assumed leadership of a popular movement. He gained the nickname "the new William Tell" for his bravery.

Diplomatic Maneuvers

Faced with the impending arrival of Austrian and Spanish forces, Jenatsch was forced to flee to Venice. Upon his return, he initially sought support from France. However, he later entered into negotiations with Spain, which proved fruitless due to religious differences.

A Tragic End

In 1639, Jenatsch was ambushed and killed by masked assassins. His death marked a turning point in the conflict and left a lasting legacy in Swiss history.
