Biography of Georg Ots - Estonian Singer

Georg Ots was an Estonian popular and opera singer. His famous baritone voice captivated millions of listeners in the Soviet Union. A book about Georg Ots, the brilliant Estonian singer, will soon be available in bookstores in Finland. His wife, Ilona Ots, who led a secluded life in a small apartment in Tallinn, was a former model for a local fashion house and a star of the 60s runway. Despite the years and the difficult times she went through, Ilona still looks charming and slender. However, her main concern is the memory of Georg Ots. She sadly mentions that the Estonian government has forgotten about him, even though he brought so much joy to people.

The Early Life and Career of Georg Ots

Georg Ots, born in St. Petersburg but a resident of Estonia, began his singing career at the age of 12 in a boys' choir. He later ventured into various genres, from opera to popular songs. With his charming demeanor and pensive smile, Ots became a cultural icon for several generations of Soviet listeners, and his records could be found in every home.

The Declining Recognition in Estonia and Personal Struggles

Today, Georg Ots, who was once the pride of Estonia, is rarely remembered in his homeland. Even the ferry named after him, which used to carry Soviet Estonians across the border, has been sold and sails under a different name and flag. Ilona Ots lost her previous apartment, where she lived with Georg, due to the former owner's claims. She now resides in a small apartment, content that her new home is in the city center. To make ends meet, she had to sell her car, country house, and even her piano.

Travels and Romantic Memories

During their marriage, Ilona and Georg, a soloist at the Estonia Theatre of Opera and Ballet, traveled to dozens of countries. However, Ilona can no longer afford to visit even Russia. She nostalgically recalls their romantic experiences in Siberia and Central Asia, where they encountered warm-hearted and kind Russian people who provided them with significant help.

Mixed Reception and the Legacy of Georg Ots

Ilona Ots refuses to discuss the Estonians' attitude towards Georg Ots, as some cannot forgive him for singing Russian romances and serving as a deputy in the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. She believes that music, culture, and sports should remain separate from politics, and Georg was always outside of political matters. She is aware of the people who genuinely loved her and Georg, and those who only enjoyed their company superficially. Ilona is grateful for the clarity it brings and asserts that she will never compromise or bow down to undeserving individuals.

Recognition and Regrets

While not all of Estonia's elite holds a negative opinion of the singer, Ilona mentions that when Edgar Savisaar, the former Prime Minister of Estonia and the Mayor of Tallinn, allocated funds for a museum dedicated to Georg Ots, the money ended up being used for different purposes. Nevertheless, there is a music school named after Georg Ots and a minor planet bearing his name in Tallinn.

The Legacy of Georg Ots

After Georg Ots passed away, his remarkable voice and the planet named in his honor remain. Ilona also has a nine-year-old grandson named Georg. In September, on the anniversary of the Soviet baritone's death, a book written by Estonian journalist Kulle Raig will be released in Finland. Unfortunately, this does not bring much joy to Ilona Ots, as she doubts the book will be translated into Russian or gain much attention in Estonia.
