Early Life and Education
George Ames Plimpton was born in New York City in 1927, the grandson of George Arthur Plimpton, founder of the publishing house Ginn. His father, Francis Taylor Pearsons Plimpton, was a lawyer and partner at the firm Debevoise and Plimpton, and later served as ambassador to the United Nations from 1961-1965. George was one of five children, with three brothers and a sister.
After excelling in elite preparatory schools, Plimpton enrolled at Harvard University in 1944 to study English. However, his education was interrupted by World War II and his service in the Army. Following his discharge, he completed his undergraduate studies abroad at Cambridge University, where he earned a second bachelor's degree in English in 1952.
Literary Career
In 1953, Plimpton joined the editorial staff of the influential literary magazine The Paris Review. He also became involved with the French magazine Merlin. His connections in the publishing world and his unique approach of participating in various activities to write about them gained him notoriety in literary circles.
Over his lifetime, Plimpton authored more than a dozen books on diverse topics. His critically acclaimed biography, Truman Capote, was based on interviews with Capote's lovers, friends, colleagues, and detractors. He also co-wrote the biography Edie: An American Biography with Jean Stein, which was adapted into a film featuring Plimpton himself.
Film and Acting
Plimpton's creative endeavors extended beyond writing. He appeared in over 50 film and television projects, including Gus Van Sant's Academy Award-winning Good Will Hunting, the comedy Just Visiting, and the thriller Just Cause starring Sean Connery.
Personal Life
Plimpton married twice, first to Freddy Medora Espy from 1968-1988, with whom he had two children. His second marriage was to Sarah Whitehead Dudley from 1991 until his death. Plimpton and Dudley welcomed twin daughters.

George Plimpton passed away in New York City on September 25, 2003, at the age of 76. He left behind a remarkable legacy as a versatile writer, biographer, journalist, screenwriter, and actor.
