Biography of George Curry
Early Life and Criminal ActivitiesGeorge Sutherland Curry, also known as Kid Curry, was born in West Point, Prince Edward Island, around 1864. His family moved to Chadron, Nebraska, where Curry embarked on a life of crime. He gained nicknames such as "Big Nose" and "Flat Nose" and settled in a secret hideout in Wyoming. It was there that he formed a friendship with Harvey Logan, who later took on Curry's last name.
Joining the Wild Bunch
Kid Curry, known for his love of alcohol and prostitutes, became one of the most dangerous outlaws of the Old West under George's criminal mentorship. Alongside Harvey Logan, the duo robbed banks before joining Butch Cassidy's notorious gang, the Wild Bunch.
Capture and Escape
On June 28, 1897, Curry and Kid were captured after a failed bank robbery in Butte County, South Dakota. However, they managed to escape from Deadwood Prison in November of the same year, after dealing with a prison guard. The trio stole horses and returned to Montana, where they stocked up on stolen provisions. They encountered another law enforcement group in the Bearpaw Mountains, resulting in a shootout. Thanks to their fortified hideout and the presence of other Wild Bunch members, the sheriff and his men were forced to retreat.
Crimes with the Wild Bunch
With the Wild Bunch, George Curry took part in various criminal activities, including the robbery of the Overland Flyer train in Wilcox, Wyoming, on June 2, 1899. The train crew identified Cassidy, Curry, Kid Curry, and Ellsworth Lay as the perpetrators. Sheriff Hazen formed a posse, but he was quickly killed, leading to chaos. The Wild Bunch, leaving their horses behind, managed to reach the Tisdale Mountains in Wyoming. Here, they obtained new horses and supplies.
Death and Revenge
George Curry was shot and killed by Sheriff Jesse Tyler in Grand County, Utah, on April 17, 1900. Upon hearing the news, Kid Curry, who had recently learned of his younger brother Lonny's killing by law enforcement, vowed to seek revenge. In May 1900, Kid arrived in Utah from New Mexico and killed Sheriff Tyler and his deputy, Sam Jenkins, in a shootout, fulfilling his promise.
